2023 NBA DRAFT / MOCK & PREDICTIONS
Here’s some bonafides so when you ask yourself “what does this guy know?” which is a question you could ask about most things that I would type or say.
I started doing this, this being watching scouting reports, highlights, full games, watching guys best and worst games & all kinds of different things, as a time consuming hobby around 2015 but didn’t really lock in until a few years later. But here are a few of my biggest wins and my biggest misses on predicting who I thought would be good/stick around/ in the NBA or just my favorite kind of players. I am transparent and honest, if nothing else. Stupidly, I might say.
2015- I had Devin Booker in my top 5 prospects. I also had D’Angelo Russell first. I had second round pick Montrezl Harrell in my top 10. I also had Rashad Vaughn top 15.
2016- I had undrafted Fred VanVleet in my top 20. I also had Wade Baldwin in my top 15. Jamal Murray was my number one prospect this year. Thon Maker was a top 10 guy for me.
2017- I had Donovan Mitchell in my top 3. I also had DJ Wilson in my top 15. I had DeAaron Fox as my number 2, but I had Jayson Tatum at 3.
2018- I had Jalen Brunson as my number 9 prospect. I also had Collin Sexton ahead of him. I had Luka Doncic number 1. I also had Omari Spellman in my top 15.
2019- I had undrafted Lu Dort in my top 15. But I had PJ Washington in my top 3. I had the 48th pick Terance Mann in my top 10. But I also had Cam Reddish in my top 5.
2020- I had Tyrese Maxey as my number 3 prospect. But I also had James Wiseman number 1. I had Saddiq Bey as a top 10 prospect. I also had Udoka Azibuike as a top 20 guy.
I withhold judgment since it’s only been two seasons with these next players since some will step up but here’s the players I believed in recently that have not reached my prediction and players who compared to where they were in consensus I believed in more and have overachieved where they were picked.
2021- Biggest hits- Jose Alvarado (undrafted, had in my top 20), Ayo Dosunmu (picked 38th, had 22nd)
Biggest misses- Jalen Suggs (5th, i had him first), Keon Johnson (21st pick, i had him 5th)
2022- Biggest hits- Tari Eason (17th, I had him 6th), Jalen Duren (13th, I had him 3rd)
Biggest misses - Trevor Keels (42nd, I had him 20th), EJ Liddell (41st, I had him 10th)
NOW, onto my big board. Stay for two Mock Drafts at the end. The realistic and the BOB DRAFT
BOB’S BIG BOARD
(with ESPN consensus placement at the end of description)
TIER 1 (no questions really, gotta take him)
Victor Wembanyama, 7’5 Center, France - Franchise changing 7 foot 5 inch Anthony Davis defense mixed with inefficient Kevin Durant offense. Super young and hard working. Usually you don’t want to put too much on a kid but this is a top 50 all time player potential. Not much else to say. You’ll hear and see all about him for a long time to come. (ESPN ranking - also 1)
TIER 2 (I could argue any of these guys at number 2, but ordered by my personal preference)
Taylor Hendricks, 6’9 Power Forward, UCF - I saw a lot of Jaren Jackson Jr in his game, but with a better shot and a few inches shorter. I think in the right situation he could turn into an all defense team guy who also scores well. Mark me down for believing. I hope he has the motivation and mental makeup to be what I see from him on video and in games. Last year I had Jalen Duran as my guaranteed post player and this year it is this guy. (ESPN Ranking 9)
Anthony Black 6’7, Point Forward, Arkansas - super smart offensive creator that if he fixes his shot will be a no brainer great player. I believe in what I saw from him this year, and I get not having a shot should maybe disqualify him from top 3 potential but I think it’s close. He should be working on that and we’ve seen great players fix their shots. But the things he’s already excelling at can’t be taught at some point. He has IT to me as a playmaker. (ESPN Ranking 8)
Cason Wallace 6’4 Guard, Kentucky - The next Jrue Holiday if everything works out. Great defense and can run an offense immediately. Not sure if he is worthy of this high of a ranking but I think I have him this high because he’s such a guarantee to me. Everything he does will translate. In the right situation he will flourish and in the wrong one he will still be solid. (ESPN Ranking 14)
Jalen Hood-Schifino 6’5 Guard, Indiana - Streaky but a ball dominant guard with good defense and an excellent passer. I’m a little higher on him than most because I think, while not consistent, his shot looked great and had some real confidence as a freshman on a team with a dominant player in the post. I would say in 3-4 years he is a borderline all star. (ESPN Ranking 11)
Jarace Walker 6’8 Forward, Houston - All defense level player who could be Draymond lite on defense with better offense. I compare another player to Draymond later, but it’s purely smart defense and then making everyone better around them offensively. And some of the video I’ve seen on this guy show me he has that in him at his best. (ESPN Ranking 7)
Brandon Miller 6’9 Small Forward, Alabama - Few flaws with some questions about his off court issues, and a Paul George level of potential to his game. My worries are his overall defense and doing more than shooting. But it’s clear he should be an NBA player for a long time. (ESPN Ranking 2)
Scoot Henderson 6’2 Point Guard, G League - high flying 6’2 mid range playmaker with bad defense and inconsistent three point shooting. If he gets a consistent deep shot and cuts down on turnovers I get why he goes 2 or 3. But right now he’s just not as good or physically imposing Westbrook. (ESPN Ranking 3)
Cam Whitmore 6’7 Forward, Villanova - Athletic, strong, great shooter, with so much upside he could be the second best player in the draft. He has injury issues though and didn’t lead to much winning when he did play. May not be fair, but when it comes to splitting hairs in these 10 I had to find things to differentiate them. (ESPN Ranking 6)
Ausar Thompson 6’7 Small Forward, Overtime Elite - Less of a playmaker than his brother but plays better defense and can guard just about anyone with a smoother shot. I think I am the only one I’ve seen rating him above his brother since the beginning of the year. (ESPN Ranking 5)
Amen Thompson 6’7 Point Forward, Overtime Elite - Josh Giddey potential here, but a worse shot and bad defense, but has second best in draft potential. I’m not as high on these two as most as you can see but there is undeniable talent that if developed correctly and if they are mentally ready could be huge. I just don’t buy it yet. (ESPN Ranking 4)
TIER 3 (Role players most likely to me with potential to be end of roster at worst or starters at best all of them. Likely a top 5 guy in the draft here.)
Kobe Brown 6’8 Forward, Mizzou - My favorite overall player in the draft. He is crafty at every level. Improved his shooting incredibly this past season, can score driving and finishing, and passes at an NBA level. His rim protection is good for a guy his size, and can guard alright 3-5’s. I love his game and I might be overrating him since theres a chance it doesn’t translate in the NBA, but I think at worst he gets a G League shot and does so well he gets a two way on a team next year and gets some minutes. I love him though. (ESPN Ranking 44)
Olivier-Maxence Prosper 6’8 Forward, Marquette - My favorite defensive player in the draft, maybe not the best but his length. athleticism, hustle, and smarts make him such a good projected NBA wing. He has a decent shot and constantly cuts or gets ready in the dunker spot. I think on the right team he will be playing an 8th man role at worst in a few years in the playoffs. He has real what if Lu Dort was 4 inches taller and didn’t take bad threes feeling to him. (ESPN Ranking 29)
Trayce Jackson-Davis 6’9 PF/Center, Indiana - Limited physically but passes, posts up, and plays defense with the best of this class. I think he is smart enough and talented enough to make a place. NBA ready guy. Might be reaching but I fall for these types of smart post players so easily. (ESPN Ranking 38)
Kobe Bufkin 6’4 Point Guard, Michigan - Hate to say someone is guaranteed but I would feel pretty confident we will see this guy coming off the bench at the least for sure, and maybe starting for 10 years or more. Has Dinwiddie but better potential. Does everything okay. Might even be the Maxey of the year, but I don’t like him that much. (ESPN Ranking 18)
Andre Jackson 6’6 Small Forward, UConn - Has a bad shot, but literally everything else i like. Playmaking, defense, passing, dribbling, high IQ on cutting, help defense, and just made a ton of winning plays for the national champs. He may not make enough of an impact on a team since he can’t shoot, but if there was ever a new Draymond contender it’s him. (ESPN Ranking 32)
Gradey Dick 6’8 Guard/Forward, Kansas - One of the best shots in the draft, hustles and moves well in the offense but upside is limited. Austin Reaves will help his stock purely by being an energetic white guy with floppy hair who is not near as naturally gifted as this guy is. (ESPN Ranking 10)
Jordan Hawkins 6’5 Shooting Guard, UConn - Great shooter, guaranteed role player with his shot and complete game but unsure about what else he could bring. But he is solid all around and wins everywhere he goes. (ESPN Ranking 15)
Keyonte George 6’4 Shooting Guard, Baylor - All offense, reminds me of better Jaden Hardy, could run an offense in a few years in the right place. But would be worried he might just be a Cam Thomas. But he could also be Donovan Mitchell. (ESPN Ranking 16)
TIER 4 (my biggest group, last few spots on the roster/ rotation guys who over time could be solid role players making an 8-9 man rotation in a few years and there’s almost guaranteed to be a really good player or two in here somewhere which I have put an * by as my top choices for that)
Leonard Miller* 6’10 Forward, G League/Canada - all potential, very raw but has All Defense level hype if in the right situation and runs the floor well. He’s got such untapped ability I could see someone talking themselves into him if they don’t need him to contribute right away. (ESPN Ranking 23)
Bilal Coulibaly 6’7 Small Forward, France - A great defender in every way, tons of hustle, and a high upside offensive slasher and lob threat. Played on the same team as Wemby and got a lot of attention thanks to that. He could be Luol Deng or out of the league. Not sure, but the tape is too good not to want to see what he can do. (ESPN Ranking 22)
Nick Smith Jr* 6’5 Guard, Arkansas - Pure Scorer, strikes me as a 6th man of the year best case scenario Jordan Clarkson type, but some think he could be even better. As the summer has gone on I am starting to agree with them. (ESPN Ranking 13)
Noah Clowney* 6’10 Center, Alabama - Stretch 5 with good defense and seems like he’s only scratched the surface of his potential. He runs the floor well and could be a starter by seasons end. (ESPN Ranking 20)
Amari Bailey* 6’4 Shooting Guard, UCLA - Good on ball defender, good shooter, developing playmaker and all around upside. Played with mostly older guys and didn’t miss a beat. Would bet on this kid. (ESPN Ranking 43)
Sidy Cissoko 6’8 Forward, France - Defense first prospect with a decent shot who can guard anyone 2 through 5. May not play right away but his defense will keep him on rosters for years to come. (ESPN Ranking 40)
Colby Jones 6’6 Guard, Xavier - a pass first and defensive guy who already seems like a Pacer, who will have to develop his catch and shoot in order to stick around. I think he will. (ESPN Ranking 28)
Jalen Slawson 6’7 Small Forward, Furman - Another guy who does everything okay and has limited scoring potential at the next lecel unless it’s catch and shoot, but seems like a natural role player on a playoff team. I love what he brings and is so smart. This is my biggest disagreement with consensus. (ESPN Ranking 78)
Jordan Walsh 6’7 Forward, Arkansas - Good defense, high motor, and lots of upside and skills on a guy who wins every where he goes. I see someone who will be in the league a long time but probably never better than the 4th best starter. 7’3 wingspan plus his level of hustle is perfect for a coach. (ESPN Ranking 39)
GG Jackson* 6’9 Power Forward, South Carolina - NBA ready offense with questions everywhere else, including his attitude and effort levels. If he figures it out might be the steal of the draft. I would be worried unless I have a culture and other players around to help him. (ESPN Ranking 33)
Brice Sensabaugh 6’6 Guard/Forward, Ohio St - Great shooter and self creator, but can’t pass, or play defense. Has potential because he’s such a natural scorer. It’s hard not to see his shot making and want to develop it. (ESPN Ranking 21)
Dariq Whitehead 6’7 Shooting Guard, Duke - Injury worries is the main issue here, but he has a good shot and can self create. Just not sure he does enough else to stick around. Could be the guard Harry Giles. (ESPN Ranking 26)
Mouhamed Gueye 7’ Center, Wazzu - Smooth shooting stretch 5 who can score inside as well, with good disruptive defense, and high IQ play. He is still developing and I think has some of the highest potential of this group. I think if he wasn’t playing at midnight on ESPN2 every night he would be a sure first rounder. (ESPN Ranking 46)
Dereck Lively 7’1 Center, Duke - Lob catching rim protector in the classic sense. Probably the next Willie Cauley Stein but his size gives him higher potential. If he ever goes to the Brook Lopez school of shooting he will stick around 15 years. I’m lower on him than most but his potential is high enough he will likely go early. (ESPN Ranking 12)
Ricky Council IV* 6’6 Shooting Guard, Arkansas - Probably in the dunk contest next year or the year after. Pure athlete who needs a consistent shot to make it. But his skills are too tempting to not have this high for me. Scored a lot on a team that has 2-3 potential first round picks that aren’t him. If you told me he was a top 5 guy in this draft in a few years I wouldn’t be surprised. (ESPN Ranking 52)
Jaylen Clark 6’5 Forward, UCLA - PJ Tucker like player with great defense and almost no offense. High motor and plays winning basketball. Would have to go somewhere okay with having him just be a small ball big who can guard the best player. So of course I love him but not sure if he makes a roster after a few seasons. (ESPN Ranking 55)
Maxwell Lewis 6’8 Small Forward, Pepperdine - Like a less ready made Harrison Barnes so could disappear but with the right development he could be a solid jack of all trades player. Lots of upside pick. High ceiling and low floor guy. (ESPN Ranking 31)
Jett Howard* 6’8 Small Forward, Michigan - Maybe the best shooter in this draft but his lack of anything else makes me worry but having his dad Juwan’s pedigree does make me think he could develop into something. Probably ends up being a Laker. (ESPN Ranking 17)
Jaime Jaquez 6’7 Forward, UCLA - Great at post ups and mid range, passing, smart help defender but athletic limitations will keep him from going high because of lack of upside but if I was the Bucks, Warriors, Nuggets, or any playoff team in need of a cheap role player who can score and rotate on defense I would go here. (ESPN Ranking 30)
Jalen Wilson 6’8 Forward, Kansas - A true winning player who got better every year and I think if he was 19-20 would be thought of much higher. He plays in the post a lot in college but has a good shot, dribbles and creates for himself, and is a decent defender. I don’t see much negative here but likely not an impact guy. (ESPN Ranking 42)
Marcus Sasser 6’3 Point Guard, Houston - Hard worker who has a great shot, creates for himself, and has a longer wingspan for a small guard and can guard pretty well. Just his potential limitations make him lower, but could easily become a Gabe Vincent in the right place. (ESPN Ranking 37)
Kris Murray 6’8 Forward, Iowa - Very similar to his brother Keegan, just not as good. He’s a classic 3 & D wing and maybe Keegan being a success will lead to his as well. I don’t particularly care for his game and find it boring. (ESPN Ranking 25)
Adama Sanogo* 6’9 PF/C, UConn - He got better as the season went along and hasn’t even played basketball that long. He likely won’t be a hugely impact player but could easily be a Thomas Bryant with more high IQ play. Love this guy. (ESPN Ranking 61)
Toumani Camara 6’8 Forward, Dayton - I have a big love of Dayton basketball and this guy was my favorite. He plays great defense, scores at the rim at a super high rate, and runs the floor well. Passes well, and while not a consistent 3pt shot, still shot over 35% on very hot and cold stretches. I like him a lot but him already being 23 could limit his potential. (ESPN Ranking 54)
Julian Phillips 6’8 Forward, Tennessee - Classic 3 & D guy who I see being a Torrey Craig type. Guards so well, and rebounds bigger than his size. Decent shot and I think if you are a playoff team looking for a cheap option I would consider him. (ESPN Ranking 34)
Keyontae Johnson 6’5 Shooting Guard, Kansas St - Good catch and shoot guy, but shouldn’t be creating for himself or others in the half court. Could be a solid role player who shoots some threes and plays hard defense. Also great at transition passing. Unsure how much better he gets but I like his effort and how much he made winning plays. (ESPN Ranking 45)
Ben Sheppard 6’6 Guard/Forward, Belmont - Good shooting, defense, but against weaker competition and has the physical limitations. If he did all this even in the Atlantic 10 I think he’s a for sure 1st rounder. But that lesser competition and lack of NBA level athleticism worries me. I’m higher on him than most. But not ESPN. (ESPN Ranking 36)
Rayan Rupert 6’7 Forward, France - could be a defensive specialist but I don’t know if there is a place in the NBA anymore for a Andre Roberson type guy. Probably a Heat player who we love in a couple years. I always want to like these guys but then they are gone so soon. (ESPN Ranking 19)
Mike Miles Jr 6’2 Point Guard, TCU - Small, but fights like hell and if he nails his shot consistently he will be a solid back up guard. Passes well and plays hard. Love his game but he may just be Miles McBride 2.0 (ESPN Ranking 64)
Brandon Podziemski 6’5 Shooting Guard, Santa Clara - Kennard lite, not much else to offer here. If he knocks his shots down, like he is expected to, will get to play somewhere. Playoff teams should be looking for this guy. (ESPN Ranking 27)
Bobi Klintman 6’10 Power Forward, Wake Forest - Looks to be a stretch big type player who has a lot of upside and won’t be ready for awhile. But he doesn’t have a weakness except doesn’t play as hard as you’d want. Can shoot, play defense, spaces the floor. I would take him if I’m a playoff team or someone willing to be patient. (ESPN Ranking 48)
TIER 5 (not much faith in, but I do see things in their game that could lead to them surprising me. Mix of guys I love who I don’t think will make the league and guys who I really don’t like but scoring ability could get them some time.)
Tristan Vukcevic 6’10 PF/C, Serbia - His offense is NBA ready with a good shot and cuts well, looking to score. But I have him this low because he’s very skinny, doesn’t dribble super well, can’t guard or play good defense overall, and I think could just get played off the floor if he isn’t making threes. (ESPN Ranking 35)
Drew Timme 6’10 C, Gonzaga - Crafty in the low post and passing with fantastic rebounding effort, but his defense is terrible and is so limited athletically unless he figures out the defense and develops a shot he will not be in the league. I really like his game, but I don’t think it fits in the NBA. (ESPN Ranking 73)
Nikola Djurisic 6’8 Small Forward, Serbia - Shooter without much else to his game. Could become a decent role guy on catch and shoot threes if he isn’t played off the floor defensively. (ESPN Ranking 53)
Julian Strawther 6’7 Small Forward, Gonzaga - Good shooter, but not much else. His lack of impact in other areas worries me more than other good shooters. (ESPN Ranking 49)
James Nnaji 6’10 Center, Nigeria - Rim protector and lob threat in that default big guy mold. Very limited offensively and not good enough at anything yet to feel great about. Lots of potential. I like his game but just don’t feel confident about him making it. (ESPN Ranking 24)
Terquavion Smith 6’4 Shooting Guard, NC State- Inefficient Trae Young with more athleticism and if he’s not scoring it can get bad. He has real Bones Hyland vibes. (ESPN Ranking 41)
Emoni Bates 6’9 Small Forward, Eastern Michigan - Taller Nick Young, but with a weirder shot. He’s all shotmaking with no defense really. Not a fan. (ESPN Ranking 51)
WHOA
Before I do my mock here are some draft stats. I ranked the top players in each draft from 2010-2020. 21 & 22 are awaiting judgement. I usually wait 3 years to really think about redrafting. But in my rankings I found
From 2010-2020 a top 3 pick isn’t as guaranteed as it is presented. Here are the best players from each draft in these years with their number pick next to them.
2010- Paul George 10th, John Wall 1st, DeMarcus Cousins 5th, Gordon Hayward 9th
2011- Kawhi Leonard 15th, Jimmy Butler 30th, Klay Thompson 11th, Kyrie Irving 1st, Kemba Walker 9th, Nikola Vucevic 16th
2012- Anthony Davis 1st, Damian Lillard 6th, Draymond Green 35th, Bradley Beal 3rd, Khris Middleton 39th
2013- Giannis Antetokounmpo 13th, CJ McCollum 10th, Rudy Gobert 27th
2014- Nikola Jokic 41st, Joel Embiid 3rd, Zach LaVine 13th, Julius Randle 7th, Aaron Gordon 4th, Marcus Smart 6th
2015- Karl-Anthony Towns 1st, Devin Booker 13th, Kristaps Porzingis 4th, Myles Turner 11th, Kevon Looney 30th
2016- Jaylen Brown 3rd, Domantas Sabonis 11th, Pascal Siakam 27th, Jamal Murray 7th, Brandon Ingram 2nd, Ben Simmons 1st, Dejounte Murray 29th, Malcolm Brogdon 36th
2017- Jayson Tatum 3rd, Donovan Mitchell 13th, De’Aaron Fox 5th, Bam Adebayo 14th, Lauri Markkanen 7th, Jarrett Allen 22nd
2018- Luka Doncic 3rd, Trae Young 5th, Shai Gilgeious-Alexander 11th, Jalen Brunson 33rd, Mikal Bridges 10th, Jaren Jackson Jr 4th, DeAndre Ayton 1st
2019- Ja Morant 2nd, Zion Williamson 1st, Darius Garland 5th, Tyler Herro 13, Keldon Johnson 29th, Jordan Poole 28th
2020- Anthony Edwards 1st, Tyrese Haliburton 12th, Desmond Bane 30th, LaMelo Ball 3rd, Tyrese Maxey 21st, Immanuel Quickley 25th
Now if you’ll bare with me, here are some things from that. the 1st pick is only in those groups 8 of 11. 2nd picks? twice in 11 years. Statistically the 2nd pick is much more likely to not a be top 5 player in the draft. 3rd pick show up 6 times. And the third pick has been the best player in the draft more often than 1st pick. The 3rd pick has been the best player in the draft more often than the 2nd pick is even mentioned up there. There are 5 total second round picks in there. That means statistically in the history of these 11 years, it is more likely a second round pick will be better than the 2nd pick in the draft. There’s all kinds of arguments for why this is. But I’m just stating things. Take 2020 for an example. 4 of those players were picked 12th, 21st, 25th, and 30th.
My reason for including this is that the NBA draft is not boring and theres only a few top guys and then its blah. Franchises can be changed by late picks. Think about how consequential Maxey has been to Philly. Tyler Herro has been to Miami. Brunson in Dallas and now NY. Look at Bam right now. A lot can be situational. But I don’t think just anyone put there would do what those players have done. So my point being I rarely agree with consensus draft scouts. I don’t know more, but I know that theres certain things that work in the NBA and I pick guys who 1. I love their games, and 2. Seem more likely to make it based on what I’ve seen, Now, this said, lets get to my personal choices.
Here’s my MOCK DRAFT. Call me Mel Sniper Jr. This is what I WOULD DO, not what I think will happen.
San Antonio Spurs- Victor Wembanyama, 7’5 Center, France
This guy is unbelievable when you watch. He gets talk because of his offense, but I see a Defensive Player of the Year. He blocks so many shots, impacts every part of the game. I won’t be surprised if he isn’t as impactful on the defensive end in the NBA just because he will surely rest some there to take on the offensive role he will have. But I think he will always be a good defender. He shoots threes decently, 30% right now, and can do just about anything. He looks like an inefficient Kevin Durant on offense right now and he’s not in the NBA yet. His ceiling is All time great, his floor is Karl Anthony Towns with All Defense Team levels on that end. Pop got him another one.
Charlotte Hornets - Taylor Hendricks, 6’9 PF, UCF
My first WHOA pick is my belief in this guy. When you pick this high in the draft you can’t get cute. I think this is potentially the second best guy in the draft. I think this Hornets roster is tied to Hayward, Rozier for another year, but really only have two guaranteed players. LaMelo Ball, due an extension, and Mark Williams who showed a lot of promise as a center of the future. Hendricks has Jaren Jackson Jr potential. He won’t block as many shots of course, but has a better shot already, more aggressive and athletic. If he brings the hustle and skill I’ve seen on video this guy will be the Jalen Duren steal of the draft but with a good shot. Give me LaMelo and Hendricks running PnR or PnPop all day. And roaming around on defense with a large center like Williams will only make him better. I know he won’t go here but I would have to consider it if I’m Charlotte.
Portland Trail Blazers - Jarace Walker, 6’8 PF, Houston *might be traded
The reason I am taking my 6th best guy 3rd is because I still believe in Damian Lillard. If you pair Dame, Simons, Sharpe, Walker, and Nurkic, and then maybe trade some things or just sign some to fill out the roster I think they make the playoffs. Maybe I’m foolish, but I don’t trade Dame and I try to make the best team I can around him with these two first round picks. Getting a great defensive forward who can connect everyone so well on offense excites me if I’m Portland.
Houston Rockets - Anthony Black 6’7 Point Forward, Arkansas
Something this team is missing is ball movement and high IQ play. Black brings all of that immediately. Also letting him just be your PG means you have a height advantage and length that helps every facet of the game. Give me a Green, Eason, Sengun, and Jabari Smith core surrounding a playmaker like Black and I think Udoka and the Rockets become so much better so fast. But, obviously if they bring Harden in that would change things.
Detroit Pistons - Brandon Miller, 6’9 SF, Alabama
Miller has the off court stuff, but on the court it’s obvious why he would be a number 1 pick in some years. He’s obviously got the potential and I have him 7th on my board but he’s grown more as I’ve watched and dove in further. At his best he could be a Paul George type. I just don’t trust the defense yet, but overall has few flaws that I can see. He’s confident and led arguably the best team in college basketball all season. On a team with Cade, Ivey, Duran and more I think he could excel.
Orlando Magic - Cason Wallace, 6’4 PG, Kentucky
This would be my best case scenario if I’m Orlando. You won’t be playing Fultz forever and you need more defense to surround your offensive guys Paolo and Franz. I think Wallace takes some pressure off Suggs, and he can learn from Fultz. He is going to guard the best 1-3 player on the other team and play solid all around.
Indiana Pacers - Cam Whitmore 6’7 Forward, Villanova
this guy is physically ready, has a fantastic shot, and super athletic. I think he’s perfect to start right away and give Indiana their own powerful high ceiling prospect like they got last year with Mathurin. He could end up being a top 5 guy in this draft if things work out. One of those guys I think will only shine next to a ball dominant player like Haliburton. If you have Haliburton, Mathurin, Whitmore, and Turner you have something that could be Play in worthy at least.
Washington Wizards - Jalen Hood-Schifino, 6’5 Point Guard, Indiana
I’m higher on JHS than most because I see a guy who is streaky but has everything you’d want. Had high level scoring games, plays good defense, was the primary ball handler on a very good NBA type offense in college. He needs time to grow and learn and no better way to learn that than having a guy like Beal nearby. I think JHS could easily be the PG of the future for this team best case. Pair that with Zinger and Kuzma and this roster has more talent than you’d think. He could even play behind someone to start with if he isn’t ready. But I have faith in his game.
Utah Jazz -Scoot Henderson 6’2 Point Guard, G League
I have a projected top 3 pick at 9 because of his size, shooting inconsistency, and his terrible defense. He has all the physical tools to be great if being 6’2 doesn’t hold him back. If his shot becomes consistent I would raise him quite a bit, but I guess I’m in the minority here seeing limitations over the physical prowess. But he’s still a top 10 prospect for me. Give me some Scoot and anyone on this Jazz roster over 6’8 PnR’s tomorrow. He gives people Westbrook vibes but I am not ready to call him that good yet. I considered taking him earlier, which I could likely regret, but this is just me. I think it’s a weird draft for him that unless he’s truly an eventual All NBA level guy, it’ll be a weird fit with the Hornets or Blazers.
Dallas Mavericks - Ausar Thompson 6’7 SF, Overtime Elite *might be traded
My worry about the brothers playing in the OTE league is maybe silly but it’s just not as good a league as NCAA, or Euro. But I do see greatness in these brothers. I took Ausar over Amen because I see better defense with him. All Ausar needs is to develop a consistent shot and he could be great. He’s more of a natural forward as well and could really light it up on catch and shoot’s if he develops. And Amen will probably need the ball in his hands more than Luka would allow.
Orlando Magic - Amen Thompson 6’7 Point Forward, Overtime Elite
I think theres Josh Giddey potential with Amen. His defense is worse, but he also can run an offense if correctly applied. Has more athleticism than Giddey, but I’m not convinced yet. He’s got a lot of scouts excited and his size, skills, and untapped potential is the type of thing that could be top 3 in this draft in the right situation. Taking the talent, because Anthony Black is maybe the better version of him in my opinion. But there’s a world I’m creating where Amen, Anthony Black, Franz, and Paolo play together and just have no one under 6’7 on the floor.
Oklahoma City Thunder - Kobe Brown 6’8 Forward, Mizzou
Could be an important glue guy who catches and shoots and plays defense well with Chet dropping. I think Presti would love his work ethic, outlet passing, his improvement every year in college, and he just made big plays all the time. Super physical and aggressive and love his IQ. His shooting got so much better his senior year and he improved in almost all ways every season. I love his play and is maybe my favorite guy in the draft.
Toronto Raptors - Trayce Jackson-Davis 6’9 PF/C, Indiana
Smart post player who will pass well and rebound the hell out of it. He can score in the post and I think would be great in the dunker spot or screen setting as well. He doesn’t have enough outside game to tempt anyone but I think he would be great as a starter or a high energy sixth man to give Pascal and Barnes breaks. But I would play all three together. Giving them a low post presence and rim protection would make them better immediately. He could get a bucket when things get stuck.
New Orleans Pelicans - O-Max Prosper 6’8 Forward, Marquette
I’m shortening his name to a nickname, I think it could work, but what also could work is this hustling 7’1 wingspan 3 & D killer OMP playing next to Zion, Ingram, and the rest. He could be a small ball 4 or a large lineup 3. I love his versatility and he’s always moving and guarding the best players. If they want to go bigger than what they currently have on the roster I think this is it. He fits what they are doing with Herb, Murphy, and could play immediately.
Atlanta Hawks - Andre Jackson 6’6 Small Forward, UConn
One of the smartest and most winning players I’ve seen this year. Makes the right passes, defense help, and gets other people open constantly. Doesn’t shoot or score really, but will help Trae and Murray as they should create a top 10 or better defense with him and Capela/Okongwu. I think Snyder and the rest would love this guy.
Utah Jazz - Kobe Bufkin 6’5 G, Michigan
In this draft they got Scoot already and now they have their combo guard who could play PG while Scoot is resting or play with him moving and cutting and creating when Scoot isn’t doing it. Now the Jazz backcourt of the future is set. Kessler is about to get so many lobs. Bufkin does a little of everything and easily the guy who has made the biggest jump from what I thought of him when I first watched to now.
Los Angeles Lakers - Jordan Hawkins 6’5 Shooting Guard, UConn
I think potentially the best shooter in the draft like Hawkins who has flashes of greatness could open things up and make life a lot easier in LA. I see some more offense first ideas coming from this team in the future. Hawkins should step right in and be able to handle the shots and coming off screens. But if nothing else he is gonna catch and shoot the hell out of it and be a good person to have on the floor when AD or LeBron is having an off night.
Miami Heat - Gradey Dick 6’8 SG/SF, Kansas
He will make basically 40% of his threes and run the floor and be a competitor and Spo is gonna love him. He will probably go higher than this but I think mid first round is perfect for him and can play right away. He plays super hard and is a very smart player. He wasn’t great from the floor other than threes but could be a huge catch and shoot guy off of Jimmy and Bam. Will be good Duncan Robinson or Herro replacement. Hell, even Kevin Love replacement.
Golden State Warriors - Keyonte George 6’4 SG, Baylor
He’s a pure bucket and has Donovan Mitchell potential if everything hits right. His defense isn’t good but I trust Kerr and Co. to fix that and make things work. Score and score some more. He will do what Poole can do but likely less harmful to the team. If they can’t bring a lot of guys back a pick like this could be making the top 8 rotation next season.
Houston Rockets - Leonard Miller 6’10 Forward, G League
A Canadian prospect I scouted last year that wisely went to develop another season because he needs it. He’s extremely raw, but shows lots of potential. The kind of guy that in 5 years if he was talked about like one of the steals of the draft I wouldn’t be surprised just because of his size and abilities. Defense is first, great there. Lots of length and plenty of quickness for his size. Could guard a lot of smaller players as well as ones his size. His offense is the ?. He could be a large point forward or a dunker spot guy. Or a rim running defensive protector. Just like most of these guys where he goes will dictate this. Rockets fans should love him once he develops enough to get on the court.
Brooklyn Nets - Noah Clowney 6’10 C, Alabama
Stretch big who could play behind Claxton and learn in a way they are used to and be his backup who can rim protect and shoot. He runs the floor and will be a great developmental project on a team full of potential. He’s got great defense potential and his shot would be a welcome threat for a team that needs it. Could see him starting sooner than later if Claxton wants a big contract in a year or two.
Brooklyn Nets - Nick Smith Jr 6’5 Guard, Arkansas
A pure scorer who had some injury issues but I think if he can be more efficient there is a real chance to be an important piece for them. Doing what Seth Curry was having to do, but with more versatility in his game. I don’t trust him quite yet but I could see him becoming a steal in the right situation.
Portland Trail Blazers - Bilal Coulibaly 6’7 Small Forward *might be traded
Getting attention thanks to playing with the number 1 pick, he showed scouts why he might end up being an impactful defender and high motor offensive guy who could be a super athletic 3 & D wing. I had a hard time with who I liked more between him and my next pick but he won out. I think he could play anywhere 2-4, 4 for small ball lineups, but his defense is good enough and he can space the floor on offense.
Sacramento Kings - Sidy Cissoko 6’8 Small Forward , G League
Sidy is a tall athletic player who can guard anyone from 2-5 on the floor and has a decent shot. They are losing Barnes, and need some defense, and while I assume they will get some help elsewhere, this would be a good guy to develop with the rest of the young Kings. Could be a win now pickup to learn behind Murray year one.
Memphis Grizzlies - Colby Jones 6’6 G/F, Xavier
Losing Brooks and gaining Jones may lessen some one on one defensive impact but could raise the IQ and rotations and then make the offense much smoother. I’m expecting Ja to be out at least half the season and Jones could get run immediately over Ziaire and LaRavia. He brings pass first, defense, and catch and shoot to the game.
Indiana Pacers - Amari Bailey 6’4 Shooting Guard, UCLA *might be traded
Defense and a good shot that will bring winning basketball to the Pacers I think Carlisle will love and could develop into much more over time. He has a ton of upside and played around a very talented group. I think over time, getting passes from Haliburton and playing with Turner on the defensive end he could be very good.
Charlotte Hornets - Jordan Walsh 6’7 F, Arkansas
Offense is mostly upside, but he’s a smart super hustle player who makes life easier for his teammates. Huge wingspan and good defense that should project well to the NBA. Once he gets a more consistent shot and tightens his dribbling I think he can be a real fun guy. Love his game.
Utah Jazz - Brice Sensabaugh 6’6 Shooting Guard, Ohio St *might be traded
He’s a great bench scorer day one I think. More naturally gifted scorer who doesn’t have that killer mentality yet but will catch and shoot the lights out on a drive and kick. I think he can bring a lot of offense and not take as many shots from other guys or play negative basketball. Playing next to a great passer who will get him open and with a coach who specializes in defense will bring him to his best potential most likely.
Indiana Pacers - Jalen Slawson 6’7 SF, Furman *might be traded
connection guy who is a jack of all trades and can score and run the floor if need be. He could be the missing piece and along with Haliburton the IQ on offense would be so high. Carlisle would like him a lot.
Los Angeles Clippers - GG Jackson 6’9 PF, South Carolina
This is all potential here. He was a super touted prospect out of high school and went somewhere he could be the man and didn’t live up to that but his offensive game is no question. I think he can sit behind JJJ and learn and be ready to go next season and learn how to be a pro. They need a talented big, and don’t have much roster space.
